MEET LEILA

Leila has spent the past decade serving her community, working with neighbors and local organizations to strengthen Melrose and the surrounding region. As a City Councilor for six years, and Council President for two, she has a deep understanding of how local policies directly impact cities and towns and residents of all ages and backgrounds.

With more than 25 years of experience in higher education, government, and non-profits, Leila has shown up and gotten results. She has led on the issues that matter, including creating the first-ever Melrose Affordable Housing Trust, enacting tax breaks for seniors, advocating for critical infrastructure projects, and supporting public schools.

Born to a Pakistani immigrant father and an Irish‑Italian mother from Massachusetts, she grew up blending cultures, traditions, and perspectives. As a biracial, second‑generation American, she learned early to navigate differences with empathy and curiosity. Her family’s story, rooted in resilience and opportunity, continues to shape the values she brings to public service.

Leila currently lives in Melrose with her husband, her two children and their rescue dog, Ruby. When not serving her community, you can find her on the baseball or soccer field, or supporting local businesses and restaurants across the district.
